Constructive Discussions between Business Leaders and Minister Regarding D Hotel Situation

Following Minister Roderic O’Gorman’s recent announcement of the government’s plan to utilize the D Hotel for housing asylum seekers, a series of constructive talks have commenced between local representatives, business leaders, and government officials.

The focus now shifts to exploring the feasibility of adapting the contract with Fairkeep Ltd., the hotel owners, to allow for a ‘dual use’ arrangement as proposed by Deputy Ged Nash and supported by Taoiseach Leo Varadkar.

In a significant development, Drogheda business leaders, represented by Chamber President Hubert Murphy and Drogheda BIDS CEO Trevor Connolly, engaged in an hour-long discussion with the minister and his team at Leinster House. This meeting paved the way for addressing concerns regarding tourism impact and future funding streams, with Mr. Connolly emphasizing the need for a comprehensive economic assessment and clarity on decision-making processes.

Hubert Murphy stressed the importance of involving business leaders in nationwide decisions through organizations like Chambers Ireland and BIDs. In response, Minister O’Gorman acknowledged the potential of a ‘dual use’ compromise for the D Hotel while acknowledging associated challenges. Further clarity on this proposal is anticipated in the coming weeks.

Additionally, government officials have agreed to meet with the Drogheda Implementation Board to gain broader insights into the town’s needs and citizen perspectives.

Meanwhile, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar expressed support for Deputy Ged Nash’s proposal for a ‘dual use’ model, emphasizing the importance of maintaining tourism while fulfilling contractual obligations related to asylum seekers’ accommodation.

Deputy Nash underscored the necessity of practical solutions to mitigate economic repercussions while upholding societal values and obligations towards international protection applicants. He called for government investment in repurposing vacant buildings for broader societal benefits, criticizing the privatization of accommodation services and advocating for a more sustainable approach.

In light of recent events, Drogheda reaffirms its commitment to inclusivity, social solidarity, and welcoming nature, emphasizing the need for practical solutions aligned with its values and obligations.

The ongoing discussions reflect a collaborative effort to address multifaceted challenges while upholding Drogheda’s principles of tolerance, solidarity, and inclusivity.
